How to Clean a Bathroom Floor (The Easy Way)

Clean Bathroom Floor

If I had to make a list of the top 10 dreadful things I hate most, cleaning the bathroom (specially the floor) has to be right between having the dentist’s drill in my mouth and driving in Friday rush hour traffic with no air conditioning. But as much as I hate it, it still needs to get done and sadly there is still not an app for that.

I am a very practical person and I believe in constant improvement of ways to do things better, in less time and with fewer resources. So over the years of collecting and testing every tip and way I could find on how to clean a bathroom floor (and after much trial and error), I have come up with a fast and effective method that will work for any bathroom floor you have to face.

Step One: Gather The Supplies

Having the right supplies will save you hard work, money and time. Here is my list:

  1. A lemon cut in half
  2. Baking Soda
  3. Cleaning toothbrush / Tile brush
  4. 1/2 Vinegar 1/2 water solution in a spray bottle.
  5. Small broom (that you can use comfortably)
  6. Paper towels
  7. Your oldest towel (Or a large dry cleaning cloth)
  8. Clorox toilet bowl cleaner with bleach (Only for critical situations were grout is hosting entire civilizations of germs)
  9. Grout colorant & sealant (MAPEI white grout refresh, if you can find it)

Step Two: Clear and Sweep

  1. Get your small broom and sweep the dry floor, starting from the sides and corners and work your way to the center of the bathroom floor. You should end up with a pile of dirt, hair and other nasty stuff.
  2. At this point moisten one or two paper towels and put them over the nasty pile (everything will stick to the paper towels).
  3. Wipe the pile off the floor and place the dirty paper towels in the trash can.

Step Three: Treat Grout and Let Chemistry do The Hard Work

  1. Take your lemon halves and rub them on every inch of grout (Start on the bathroom floor corner that is farthest to the door)
  2. When you are done, go back and sprinkle baking soda on every inch of lemon treated surface (Once again start on the corner farthest from the door.
  3. Finally get the spray bottle that contains the water / vinegar solution and spray enough to cover the entire floor (use the “mist” setting). Just don’t get it too wet.
  4. Leave for 15 minutes.

Step four: Wipe and Dry

  1. When your 15 minute break is over, come back with, cleaning toothbrush, paper towels and your old towel or dry cleaning cloth.
  2. Wet your cleaning toothbrush and brush every inch of grout using the same pattern from the previous step (If the grout is not perfectly clean after this, next time you clean substitute the eco-friendly lemon and baking soda with the Clorox toilet bowl cleaner).
  3. Moisten paper towels and wipe the entire floor (make sure to get all the baking soda residue).
  4. Finally use your old towel to dry the floor. This avoids leaving moisture for new bacteria to grow in, plus you can walk in to the bathroom immediately after, without making a mess.

Bonus Step: Seal and Forget

Once you are satisfied with the cleanliness of your grout, apply the grout colorant & sealant following the instructions in the bottle. If you do it right, you will be able to skip the grout cleaning steps of the process and maybe do it only once a month instead of every week.

5 Simple Tactics For Keeping Your Hardwood Floor Clean

Keeping Hardwood Floors Clean

A hardwood floor gives your home a classy, alluring look. There are few flooring types that are more stylish. However, most homeowners avoid hardwood because they believe that cleaning them takes too much effort.

The good news is that you can still give your home the elegant look it needs. These cleaning tactics will help you clean any type of hardwood.

  1. Dust or vacuum the floor regularly – Keeping your hardwood floor clean means having to invest in a dust mop. These are mops treated with dusting agents to remove annoying dust particles and pet hair. Sweeping it daily with a dust mop keeps it shining. If you want to get down on your hands and knees, use an electrostatic cloth to clean your floor. Find these disposable cloths at any discount store. Avoid using vacuum cleaners with beater brushes that are not designed for hardwood floors. These leave ugly scratches behind.
  2. Use area rugs and runners – Consider using area rugs or runners. Place area rugs in thigh traffic areas. They help to trap loose dirt particles that leave scuff marks. Placing them at entryways is not a practical idea, as they will need constant washing and become easily spoiled. Instead, install floor mats. Carpet runners are a wonderful alternative to area rugs. Use them in the living room, dining room and other places in your home that get the most traffic.
  3. Use a damp mop weekly – Some people mistakenly believe that you should not mop your hardwood floor. While you do not want to leave scuff marks on the floor, you still need to make sure that it is clean.  Mopping weekly with a well-wrung, damp mop helps you do this. Make sure not to use a dripping, wet mop. Remember that the floor consists of real wood that cannot absorb too much moisture. If your damp mop does not remove tough stains, use a cloth and mineral spirits to clean them.
  4. Take care not to leave scuff marks – Another tactic for cleaning your hardwood floor is not to leave scuff marks. While this is not a cleaning activity per se, it keeps it looking pristine and shiny. Scuff marks will ruin the look of your hardwood floor, no matter how you clean it. Place your tables on furniture pads. Never drag your furniture on hardwood floors, and avoid wearing shoes on them. Some shoes and heels dent your floor.
  5. Pay attention to your floor finish – The last, but most important tip is to pay attention to the finish. Know exactly what finish the manufacturer used to coat your floor. Different finishes have different cleaning needs. Follow your manufacturer’s recommendations to clean your floors diligently.

Sealed Floor Surfaces

Dust the floor with a dust mop or sweep it with a soft broom. Combine a little dish washing liquid and water and completely clean the floor.  Dry it out with an absorbent cloth.

Floors Treated With Oil or Penetrating Seals

Prepare yourself to put in more effort to clean your floor if your manufacturer treated it with a penetrating seal. Regular dusting is not enough.

You have to constantly remove the oils wax with stripper products.

Use a vacuum cleaner or dust mop to clean the area. Avoid using damp mops on these floors as they trap dirt and leave scratches. Then, apply a new layer of penetrating wax on the floor.

Varnished Floor

Varnished floors, too, need more care and attention. Merely sweeping or dusting them is not enough. Before using any cleaning agents, dust the floor thoroughly. Then, pour a few drops of a cleaning agent or solvent on a wash cloth. Follow the grain as you clean the floor. Then, remove the cleaner with a dry cloth.

Untreated Floors

Floors with no sealants are probably the hardest to clean, because water easily seeps into the unprotected wood. These floors need you to go on your hands and knees. Clean stained areas on the spot with spirit-based cleaning agents. Then, use a thoroughly wrung, damp mop to go over the surface. Use a dry cloth to dry the floor completely. Cleaning hardwood floors needs a little savvy, but is not too difficult.

Vacuum cleaner has become an essential home appliance these days. While most of us know about them and use them regularly, we might not think how useful this equipment is. If you knew the history of vacuum cleaners you will know that this is one among the most useful inventions for the modern living.

Best Vacuum CleanersPrior to the invention of electric vacuum cleaners, home cleaning was a tedious task. During those days, brooms and brushes were used for cleaning. People used to remove rugs and carpets from the floor, hung them up outdoors and beaten to get the dust out. This was not only tedious task but this also caused health problems to people.

Cleaning or vacuuming is an essential task when you thinking of preserving your expensive rug, and taking advantage of the appropriate cleaner will always make that task much easier for you. If you would like the best quality for your interior house air, you’re definitely needed to take advantage of a machine which has a cool filtration system. Let me make clear what is so called filter actually, the advantage of having one, and I will share a few types and brands of the best cheap vacuum cleaners available on the market. By following this review, you will end up outfitted with necessary information in order to drastically increase your home air quality.

A vacuum cleaner which has a decent filtration system could keep your entire house more modestly. Air flow which is permitted to get away without having passing over the filtration system will certainly distribute the particles through the air. This particular dust will certainly settle on home furniture, back into the rug, and also end up being breathed in by people in the room. This is why it’s so important to stay up to date with the latest vacuum cleaner reviews. For the sake of simplicity, we’ve listed here the top 5 vacuum cleaners under $600.

Top 5 Vacuum Cleaners Under $600

Eureka Smart Vacuum – HEPA Vacuum Cleaner

HEPA filter systems were initially developed during the Manhattan Project in order to eliminate hazardous radioactive airborne dirt and dust contaminants.

HEPA is short form for High Efficiency Particulate Air filter. Typically, the filter systems comprise numerous layers of fibers, normally abs plastic, fiberglass, that will catches 99.9% of contaminants passing through it.

For getting a HEPA filter vacuum cleaner to work, most of air being released needs to move across its particular filtration system. Inside the cleaner, HEPA filters needs to contain dust and never release it back into the air or environment, whipping the reason for vacuuming in the first place.

Numerous companies tell you that their own are HEPA vacuums; but bear in mind, their wild statements need to be carefully looked into.

Producers will probably occasionally take an advantage of terminology like HEPA similar, HEPA design, and in many cases simply HEPA to explain their very own vacuum cleaners. Unmistakable, HEPA filter cleaners need to be sealed to ensure that the entire air going into the vacuum should always go through the filtration system well before getting released back into the air or environment.

There are plenty of advantages caused by utilizing a genuine HEPA filter. Low cost vacuums tend to be cheaper since they may have already being downgraded while in the production process. These kinds of vacuums are more likely to send out fine airborne dirt and dust contaminants back into the environment.

Bronchial asthma and also allergy patients are going to find out an enormous recovery of their overall health once they change to a HEPA filtered vacuum cleaner. Any HEPA filtration systems are going to capture plant pollen as well as other things that trigger allergies like dust mite fecal material.

Dyson DC17

The DC17 from Dyson is an extremely powerful upright vacuum for pet hair. Many of the other vacuums out there today that make claims that they are designed to get rid of pet hair, but don’t come close – this does. The DC17 works on all floor types. Includes a wand that expands up to 16 feet, making high reach cleaning and stairs. Its also easy to get to the hard to reach places such as under the bed or under the sofa, thanks to its low reach tool. Use on the car or upholstery.

The Dyson DC17 is a bag less cleaner and the clear bin allows you to see when it is ready for emptying. Any air that leaves the vacuum has up to 150 times less bacteria and mold than normal breathing air because of the lifetime HEPA filter.

**The Dyson DC17 has been certified as being ‘asthma friendly’ by the Asthma and Allergy foundation.**

Included is a free carpet-care kit which will leave your carpets like new. 5 YEAR WARRANTY.

The size and weight of the Vacuum is important, go for a model that is quite light to move around.

The brand of the vacuum says a lot about the quality – unfortunately the saying ‘you get what you pay for’ is correct when purchasing a Vacuum. Go for a well known brand. I have found that with Dyson you can’t go wrong.

Tools and attachments – quality of Hepa Filter, brushes that attach to hose, power cord storage etc.

The length of the power cord is also important – you don’t want to have to unplug and plug every 10 seconds when going around the house.

Dyson DC25

This Is My Personal Favourite….

The DC25 comes with the amazing Dyson Ball technology which allows easy manoeuvrability at the flick of the wrist, without sacrificing any of the amazing dyson features. Works on all floor types. The root cyclone technology will ensure that there is no loss of suction or clogging. Hygenic dust bin that is easily emptied without having to touch the dust or pet hairs to be emptied. Telescope Reach wand that makes cleaning stairs and hard to reach places easy.

**The Dyson DC25 has been certified as being ‘asthma friendly’ by the Asthma and Allergy foundation**

Do You Have Allergies?

One of the great things now for anybody with asthma or a dust mite allergy (like me) is that now there are Vacuum Cleaners out there that do not aggravate your allergies.

The CFM or airflow is one of the most important things to consider when purchasing a Vacuum that will not aggravate your allergies. The greater the airflow there is, the faster the allergens will be pulled out of the carpet. Another important thing to look at is the Hepa Filter. There are 2 sorts of Hepa Filter.

There are those that appear to look like folded paper – these will trap a percentage of the dust and dirt within the folds, but some will escape. The best type of Hepa Filter is one that is going to trap over 90% of dust and dirt – these ones do not appear like folds of paper, instead they appear like a sheet within a plastic case.

I remember before I knew about these types of Vacuums, every time I used to switch on my cheap (cant remember make – but cheap and nasty – bought by my husband – someone who doesn’t Hoover often) vacuum a big cloud of dust would fire out of it. This started my allergy off before I even started! Is anyone relating to this?

Dyson DC28

The Dyson DC28 has been specifically designed for homes with animals. It includes Root Cyclone Technology that will ensure thorough cleaning with no loss of suction or cleaning, which is why many enthusiasts claim it to be the “Best Vacuum For Animal Hair”. It will clean any floor type thoroughly. Thanks to the mini turbine head the Dyson DC28 will clean dirt and pet hair from the tightest of spaces such as stairs, cars and upholstery. 16 foot wand is included for hard to reach cleaning and stairs. It has a cord length of 35.2 feet and a 5/8 gallon bin storage.

It comes equipped with lots of tools to make vacuuming and cleaning easier, these will offer many benefits:

  • Great for the stairs, focusing on dust, dirt or pet hair
  • Debris nozzle that will even convert to a brush tool for easy dusting.
  • Flat Out head tool which will make cleaning under low furniture and household appliances.

The Dyson DC28 is a bagless vacuum, so no more having to go out ad buy vacuum bags. Any air that leaves the vacuum has upto 150 times less bacteria and mold than normal breathing air because of the lifetime HEPA filter.

**The Dyson DC28 has been certified as being ‘asthma friendly’ by the Asthma and Allergy foundation.**

Come with a 5 YEAR WARRANTY.

The Dyson DC31 Handheld Vacuum

Takes Handheld Vacuums to Another Level…..

Dsyon have created the DC31 Handheld Vacuum that will provide 10 minutes of high continuous suction or 6 minutes with 70% higher suction. Lighter, smaller and more powerful than other conventional motors. Weighs only 3.4lbs and its weight is balanced for easy handling.

The DC31 minimizes the risk of contact with dirt because it is quick to empty. The motorized brush bar includes powerful bristles to remove pet hair and dirt from carpets.

Today’s vacuum cleaners are much lighter in weight and come with a variety of accessories to facilitate easiness of cleaning. Hoover has also developed bag less vacuum cleaners were dust is collected inside a separate compartment using the principle of centrifugal force. This means you don’t have to worry about changing your vacuum cleaner bags. Life is a lot easier today.

Therefore, if you are planning for buying a vacuum cleaner in a very foreseeable future, take into account some of these basic guidelines to help you to come up with the best choice. Make sure you choose a genuine filtered vacuum cleaner to take full advantage of the airborne dirt and dust elimination. Choose regardless of whether you prefer a canister vacuum or maybe a standing one.

Last but not least, do not forget that Panasonic, Miele, Dyson, BISSELL, Electrolux, and also Eureka are often highly rated when you’re thinking about best vacuum cleaners. Cheers…
